Whelan: Leeds star Rodrigo will be out for six weeks

Noel Whelan expects Leeds United attacker Rodrigo Moreno to be sidelined for up to six weeks with a groin injury.

The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 29-year-old has “not made a great start” to his career at Elland Road for a number of reasons.

Rodrigo strained a muscle in the 3-1 win over Leicester City earlier this month and subsequently missed Wednesday’s game against Everton.

As quoted by the BBC, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa revealed that he expects the Spain international to be out for a matter of weeks, not days.

The club-record signing has been restricted to just 11 Premier League starts this season because of fitness, injury and Covid related problems.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Rodrigo’s latest setback, Whelan said: “It has been very stop-start for Rodrigo, a very indifferent season to be honest.

“When he signed he was not up to match fitness. Then, just as he got into the side and scored against Manchester City he got Covid, and now he has got a groin injury which will keep him out for four to six weeks in my opinion.

“He has not made a great start to his Leeds United career. I am sure he expected a different kind of season as well.

“We have seen glimpses of what he can do so hopefully next season we will see less injuries and a bit more consistency from him.”

Speaking on Rodrigo’s injury last week, Marcelo Bielsa said: “It’s not a question of days, more of weeks.

“Rodrigo fell and his legs separated and caused an elongation more than usual and this caused the injury.”
