Whelan makes 'shocking' Bamford claim after Leeds injury twist confirmed

Noel Whelan has admitted Leeds United have suffered from a lack of striking options after Patrick Bamford’s latest injury blow.

The former Leeds hitman and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, bemoaned the 28-year-old’s “shocking” season in terms of his fitness issues.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday (20 January), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Bamford has suffered an injury on the bottom of his foot.

The England international missed the Whites’ recent games with a hamstring injury and then a blow to the hip.

Whelan insisted Leeds have struggled without a “like-for-like” replacement up front.

“It’s a catalogue of injuries, one after another,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“When we looked at Patrick this season and the way he’s gone through so many games without being injured, it was a matter of time.

“I think the sad thing is that we didn’t have a like-for-like replacement on standby. We’ve not gone out yet and maybe brought somebody in to help us.

“You see with Newcastle and what they’re having to pay for players. We don’t really want to do that if we can try and get through it.

“Hopefully it’s only a short term injury. We’ve gone nearly half a season without our main striker.

“It’s been a shocking season for injuries and Patrick Bamford, it really has.”

Promising striker Joe Gelhardt has emerged from the under-23s during Bamford’s absence.

Dan James, Jack Harrison, Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo Moreno have also led the line this term.
