Whelan: My heart bleeds for Bamford after 'worrying' news from Leeds

Noel Whelan has admitted his heart bleeds for Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford after Marcelo Bielsa’s “worrying” injury update.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds hitman insisted the 28-year-old would be tearing his hair out during his extended layoff.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday (5th September), Bielsa admitted he could not give a return date for Bamford as the forward recovers from an ankle injury.

The Argentine boss admitted “it is not a simple injury” and that the club could not give an “exact prognosis” as to when it might heal.

Bamford picked up the injury in the draw with Newcastle back in September.

He has sat out Leeds’ last five league games.

Whelan admitted that, with no timescale as to a potential return, he really feels sorry for the England international.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s frustrating for fans and the club but also frustrating for the player.

“When you get injuries, and I’ve been there, every day you’re asking: ‘Am I there, how long do you think?’ It’s one of those where you want to get back is as soon as possible.

“When you’ve got no kind of timescale on it or they’re not giving you an idea or you know it’s not getting better and there’s a niggle there, it becomes really frustrating.

“I feel for sorry for Patrick because I know he’s probably dying to get back into a Leeds United shirt. To get back out there to score goals and help his team. It’s slightly worrying.”

Bamford scored once and contributed two assists in his first five appearances this season.

Rodrigo Moreno has filled the void left at centre-forward during the English hitman’s absence.
