Poveda tipped for breakthrough Leeds campaign after Instagram reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Ian Poveda could be set for a breakthrough campaign for Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites striker and boyhood Elland Road fan delivered his verdict after the winger unveiled his new look physique via Instagram in pre-season training.

Poveda featured in 14 Premier League games from the bench last season.

The 21-year-old’s 20 Leeds games across all competitions have yielded just one assist and no goals.

“I think how much we’ll see him play is up to him,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“He looks like a very confident young man and we’ve seen real glimpses of that quality and excitement he’s going to bring to the club. He’s a player that gets you off the edge of your seat.

“Now that he’s had another season at Leeds, another season of fitting in and getting stronger. He looks like he’s put on a bit more weight as well.

“He’s got to be pushing now. He’s got to be a regular substitute at the very least. You’ve got Harrison on that left-hand side and Raphinha on the right, there’s stiff competition all over the field now.

“From what I saw last season, he really excites me. He has that electricity about him when he came on, especially that second-half against Man City at Elland Road. The way he took the game to their left-back, he was on the ball and was very direct. That’s the sort of thing you want to see.”
