Whelan salutes 'amazing Leeds director Orta after Sky's transfer update
Noel Whelan has applauded Leeds United sporting director Victor Orta for signing Robin Koch and Diego Llorente instead of Ben White last summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the new Whites employee and ambassador claimed Orta did “exactly the right thing saying ‘no’ to Brighton wanting £40million”.
Leeds had a bid of £30million for White, 23, rejected by the Seagulls in August 2020 after a hugely successful loan spell at Elland Road in the previous campaign.
Orta deemed the asking price to be too steep for the centre-half and instead completed deals for Robin Koch and Diego Llorente for a combined fee of £31million.
A year later and, as reported by Sky Sports (19th July), White is now set to seal a £50million move to Arsenal.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Orta pulled off a masterstroke last summer, Whelan said: “Victor Orta has just been amazing.

“We see the passion that he brings to the club and the excitement that he gets from watching the games. He drives the players on from the stands.
“He is all about improving Leeds United. The players he has brought in have been exactly right.
“He did exactly the right thing saying no to Brighton wanting £40million for White and signing two top-class internationals instead.
“When you look at business well done, you have to give Orta a medal. He has brought in fantastic players who are worth a lot more than what they were signed for 12 months ago.”
