Noel Whelan has admitted he was stunned to hear Marcelo Bielsa claim Rodrigo Moreno has justified his record-breaking price tag at Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds star insisted the Spanish forward still had a lot to prove at Elland Road.
Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Bielsa claimed the 30-year-old had already proven his importance the side and justified the money spent on his signing.
As revealed by Football Insider back in August, the Whites broke their transfer record to sign the Spain international for £27million plus add-ons.
However, the deal is worth a total of £48million in fee and wages before the add-ons take effect.
Rodrigo has managed to score three goals and contribute one assist in 22 appearances to date.
He has suffered through illness and injury, most notably a groin problem which kept him out throughout February.
As such, Whelan insisted he had not seen enough to warrant the big-money price tag yet.
Asked if he agreed with Bielsa’s claim, Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “No, I think that’s debatable.
“I don’t think he’s done enough this season to justify that. I don’t think he’s scored enough goals or got enough assists to justify that. It’s a bold statement from Marcelo Bielsa. It’s his player but I still think he’s got a lot of work to do to prove that £27million price tag.
“His season has been so stop-start and very mixed in ways of performances.
“We know there’s a player there but we’ve just not seen it consistently because he’s not being fit enough or available at times
“You can’t say it’s justified because he’s not setting the world empire on fire right now. There’s more to come from him.”
