Whelan tells Leeds to complete signing of proven star as club locked in talks today

Noel Whelan has suggested Leeds United need an experienced goalkeeper to replace Kiko Casilla this summer.

The former Leed striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Illan Meslier would benefit from having proven competition pushing him for his place.

As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth on Tuesday (July 13th), director of football Victor Orta is talking to an overseas-based keeper about joining Leeds.

It is said the Whites also have a domestic target in their sights.

Casilla joined Elche on a season-long loan on Monday.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (July 10th) Leeds want to sign a younger shot-stopper to replace the Spaniard and that the club are locked in talks today.

However, Whelan suggested current incumbent Meslier, 21, could use some experienced competition to improve as a goalkeeper.

“With Kiko Casilla, we went with a bit more experience,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“We probably needed that in the Championship. You’ve seen a young man in Meslier who’s stepped up to the plate and progressed in his career quicker than everyone probably thought he would.

“I think we do need more experience. I’d like somebody in there that’s going to push him and make him better as well. To make that competition for the place stiff and strong.

“You look around every other Premier League club and they do have experience on the bench.

“Maybe a goalkeeper that is happy to sit there as number two but is happy to improve the young player that’s there right now.

“Whoever it may be, the club are not going to bring somebody that’s not going to improve the squad.”

Casilla only played three times in the Premier League last season.

He has a total of 62 appearances under his belt for Leeds.
