Whelan: This may be real reason Leeds won't bin Roberts this summer
Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United will keep hold of Tyler Roberts this summer – but only because of his age.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites striker claimed the 22-year-old needs to improve quickly if he wants a long-term future at Elland Road.
Roberts has been a regular for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since the turn of the year and has started their last 11 Premier League games.
However, the attacking midfielder, who has little over 12 months left on his contract with Leeds, is still yet to score in the Premier League.
Whelan claimed Roberts must get to the level of Chelsea and England star Mason Mount if he wants to continue playing regularly for the Yorkshire giants.
“I would still keep him at the club because of his age but that is the only reason,” he told Football Insider. “If he was 26, I would let him go.

“He still has time for growth in his game though and I think that is the only reason why Bielsa is keeping him at the club right now. It is purely down to age.
“Hopefully he can learn from the players around him. He needs to learn quickly though. There are a lot of players at 22 who have these attributes already.
“Look at Mason Mount, he is a prime example. Roberts is miles off Mason Mount, an absolute mile off.
“That is the standard you need to be in the Premier League to standout in that position. I cannot see Roberts getting to that level.”
