Whelan thrilled by 'great news' for Leeds after Gelhardt development
Noel Whelan has raved after Leeds United starlet Joe Gelhardt bagged a brace on his England under-20s debut.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the teenager’s performance is “great news” for the Yorkshire giants.
Gelhardt came off the bench in the first half of England under-20’s home clash against Romania, netting a brace in a 6-1 rout.
The 19-year-old was one of four Leeds stars to take part with Lewis Bate, Sam Greenwood and Cody Drameh all starting.
It was Gelhardt’s first-ever appearance under-20 level.
He has previously starred for the Three Lions’ under-16s, under-17s and under-18s.

Leeds ambassador Whelan showered praise on the youngster for seizing the opportunity given to him.
“He’s just taken everything in his stride – which you’ve got to do at his age,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“You’ve got to enjoy your football, every moment and opportunity that comes your way.
“It was a real chance for him to raise his profile, raise his game and show everybody what he’s made of.
“He’s not let himself down, he’s certainly not let the club down – it’s always great news to have goalscorers at any national level playing for your club.
“It just shows how far he’s come since leaving Wigan to now playing for the national sides, coming off the bench and getting a brace.
“He’s in a really good place and he’s a really confident young man who has belief in his ability.”
Gelhardt is yet to make his senior debut for Leeds
However, he has scored 13 goals in 20 appearances for the Whites’ under-23s.
