Whelan thrilled by 'out of the blue' Leeds news about James
Noel Whelan has tipped Dan James to bring a new dimension to the Leeds United attack after joining from Manchester United.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old is much more “direct” than Raphinha or Jack Harrison.
Leeds announced the capture of James on deadline day (31st August).
He joins Harrison and Raphinha as the recognised winger options at Elland Road.
Leeds allowed Helder Costa to join Valencia on loan after James’ arrival.
Whelan admitted he was buzzing over the Wales international’s arrival.

He suggested James “electric pace” would offer Leeds something different in attack.
“It’s a really exciting signing, one that came out of the blue,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“I think the manager fits his style of play down to an absolute tee. You need options. Competition is healthy. It’s going to be a really long season for Leeds United.
“When you look at Dan James, the way he plays, it’s much more direct. He gets the ball and goes past people.
“Raphinha and Harrison, they’ve all got the ability to pull out a trick.
“But I think when I watch Dan James, he doesn’t really cut back too often. He’s very direct when he gets the ball.
“He trusts himself, he trusts his ability and that pace of his, which is electric, and he just knocks it by people.
“He likes to get down to the byline and he likes to join in in the middle of the field as well.
“Everything about that is brilliant because they’re the sort of players we need.”
