Whelan tips Rangers summer signing spree as £20m+ windfall revealed

Noel Whelan has tipped Rangers to make multiple signings this summer in order to retain the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen forward suggested Celtic’s attitude will change next season and it is vital Rangers use their success as a springboard.

The first priority for Rangers will be retaining the players that led them to their first top-flight title victory in a decade.

This site revealed the Ibrox giants are set for a contract bonanza at the end of the season with the focus still firmly on Thursday night’s crucial Europa League tie.

They have already netted a guaranteed £8million from the competition this term and top-up costs will take that beyond £20million.

Whelan has suggested the money earned could help Steven Gerrard add to his squad.

He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: Gerrard won’t want to get rid of the core of the squad but keep them together and add to the core of the squad.

“They’re going to want to be more of a force. They want to try and retain the title which is going to be difficult in itself.

“Celtic are going to react to this after the embarrassing season they’ve had. They’ll be a change of manager, players coming in. There’ll be a change and shift in attitude that the manager brings.

“That might reignite some of the older players that have been there longer than most.

“Rangers will go out and progress. They won’t just sit on it and enjoy it, they’re going to want to retain it.

“Expect more signings in the summer with the money that is going to be generated.”

In other news, Danny Mills has tipped Rangers to dominate Celtic for “three, four years” as they approach a 43-year-old to potentially be their new manager.
