Noel Whelan has argued that it is a “no-brainer” for Newcastle United to sign Burnley star Jeff Hendrick this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that the Republic of Ireland international would bring a whole host of top qualities to Steve Bruce’s midfield.

The Toon Army’s interest in the 28-year-old was first revealed by Football Insider back in April, with the player available for a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Turf Moor.

In recent days, The Chronicle have reported that the Magpies are nearing an agreement that would take Hendrick to St. James’ Park ahead of the new Premier League season.

And Whelan has praised Bruce for snapping up such a solid talent on the cheap.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “It’s great business.

“Bruce knows what he wants. He knows what he needs. He’s had a good look at the players now since he’s been in there.

“When you’re looking at Jeff Hendrick, you know you’re getting a good midfield player there that can really hold down that midfield, can command it. He can get goals as well, he’s competitive, has that Premier League experience. That to me is a no-brainer.

“I think that he would be a good addition to the squad that they’ve got. They need those sort of players in that midfield area.”

Hendrick was a regular for Sean Dyche’s Burnley side last season, featuring in 24 Premier League matches, scoring twice and assisting two more.

The versatile talent is capable of operating across the midfield, and wracked up 139 outings for the Clarets over the course of a four-year spell.
