The real reason why Alderweireld absent for Tottenham clash against Southampton
By Harry Sykes
Toby Alderweireld has missed Tottenham’s clash against Southampton due to a virus, according to the club’s official media channels.
The Belgium international, 27, was expected to be named in the starting XI for the showdown against his former side at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night.
But Alderweireld was not selected in the 18-man matchday squad as he is absent from the team for the second consecutive match.
There were rumours on social media that the defender was missing due to a back problem.
But Tottenham’s official Twitter account reported shortly after the team’s were announced that Alderweireld was in fact unavailable because of illness.

This means that the Belgian will not take his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s side for the second match in succession after also missing the 2-1 win over Burnley 10 days ago.
It has been a frustrating few months for Alderweireld, who had only just returned to the team after being sidelined for two months with a knee injury.
The former Southampton player made three appearances only to once again make way for Eric Dier to be reunited at the back with Jan Vertonghen.
The pair will be in tandem against Claude Puel’s side on Wednesday night.
