Arsenal must start with Kieran Gibbs ahead of Nacho Monreal on Wednesday night in the Champions League, with Bayern Munich possessing the dangerous Arjen Robben on the wing.

The Gunners travel to the Allianz Stadium for the first leg of their last 16 tie with Bayern and will be hoping for a positive result to take back to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger needs to be particularly careful with his full-back selection as Robben has been in fantastic form this season.

Monreal, 30, has been the first-choice left-back for Arsenal during most of the campaign, but must be omitted from the starting line-up against Bayern.

The Spaniard has been a solid player for the north London club in recent seasons, but one of his main weaknesses is his pace.

He could be in for a torrid night if he starts against the pacy Robben, while Douglas Costa on the over flank could also be used to exploit Monreal.

However, Arsenal do have a good solution to nullify the Robben pace and that is Englishman Gibbs.

The left-back has been restricted to the bench for the majority of the season, but has the speed to compete against the Bayern threat.

He was recalled to the starting XI at the weekend in the 2-0 win over Hull and that suggests he could be in line for a start in the European tie.

Bayern have several threats all over the pitch with the likes of Robben, Costa, Robert Lewandowski, Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Muller.

Robbem may be the greatest threat to Arsenal, though, as he appears to be back to his very best.

The 33-year-old has scored eight goals and supplied six assists in just 19 games this season, and has the ability to win a match by himself.
