Why it would cost Man United far more than £12m to sack Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have been urged not to sack Ruben Amorim as the ramifications would be too severe.
Amorim is under huge pressure at Man United, after his side’s poor form from last season continued in the new campaign.
The Red Devils did manage a 2-1 win over Chelsea at the weekend, but that did little to quell the rumours around the Portuguese manager’s exit.
If they did decide to sack him, Man United would be forced to pay Amorim £12million in compensation, which could be seen as an unnecessary outlay.
Sacking Ruben Amorim would cost Man United more than just money
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the real cost of any dismissal would be to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reputation.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that sacking Amorim would essentially be Ratcliffe admitting he has failed.
Man United have heavily backed their manager over the summer, with big signings like Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha coming in at Old Trafford.
Wyness added that the new manager who comes in may not be happy with the squad Amorim has put together, which could result in another rebuild.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yeah, sure, it’s £12m, but it’s also then the players that he’s brought in.
“It’s not just this sort of money that a manager gets. It’s just the ramifications and knock-on effects. The unintended consequences of the players that he picked and the work he’s done to put his squad together. That’s really the cost.
“So it’s a much higher cost than the £12m, although that alone is a big number. But I think it’s a huge decision for Ratcliffe, because if he does end up sacking Amorim. That’s the ultimate admission that Ratcliffe has failed.
“He failed with Ten Hag, he got that all wrong. If he gets Amorim wrong, then I think that really is a big, big problem for Ratcliffe and he knows it. This would be the full judgment on his tenure so far and it would be a resounding thumbs down.”
Man United board and Amorim come to blows again
With tensions worsening between club and manager, Amorim is now reportedly at loggerheads with the Man United hierarchy over the future of Kobbie Mainoo.
That is according to their former chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that despite ongoing speculation, United have no plans to let the midfielder leave.
Amorim challenged Mainoo to improve and earn his place in the starting XI, but has remained stubborn in his insistence that he must compete with Bruno Fernandes.
Despite the manager’s insistence that the England international is not part of his first-team plans, the United hierarchy have refused to budge on their decision to keep him.
