Wiedwald delivers verdict on joining Leeds, fans will love this
By Derek Smithson
Felix Wiedwald has insisted that joining Leeds in the summer was not a drop down despite leaving Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper helped Bremen to an eight-placed finish last season in Germany’s top flight.
However, he has sealed a move to Elland Road and will be playing in the English Championship in the upcoming campaign.
The Whites will be striving for promotion to the Premier League and have added a new shot stopper to compete alongside Rob Green for a starting position.
Wiedwald believes that he is taking a forward step in his career by joining Leeds despite now playing in the second tier of English football.
“For me the change to Leeds United was not a descent, despite the second league, but the right step,” Wiedwald told German newspaper Weser Kurier.
Leeds fans will be delighted that their new signing doesn’t view his move as a drop down and will be hoping he can play an important role in Thomas Christiansen’s side.
The German goalkeeper made 26 appearances across all competitions and kept five clean sheets in return.
He is now expected to take up the number one position for the Whites ahead of veteran Green, while Marco Silvestri has also sealed his exit from the club this summer.
Leeds’ solid defence played an important role in their seventh-placed league finish last season and they will hope for a similar style as they look to improve with promotion.
In other Leeds news, the club’s supporters reacted to Ezgjan Alioski’s performance in a pre-season defeat to Eibar.
