Wilfried Nancy blasted for ‘utter waffle’ as Celtic ‘absolutely destroyed’ by Roma
Wilfried Nancy has endured a nightmare start to life as Celtic boss after his appointment was officially confirmed last week.
Links to Nancy were questioned before he even took the Celtic job due to his lack of experience at a club of their size with such lofty expectations.
Club legend Martin O’Neill had done a stellar job as interim manager with seven wins from eight games, but the Frenchman failed to continue that strong form as Celtic lost 2-1 to league leaders Hearts in his first match in charge on Sunday (7 December).
Their Europa League clash against Roma on Thursday (11 December) provided a chance for Nancy to put things right, but a crushing 3-0 loss on home turf only compounded his woes.
Celtic fans have slammed Nancy for his tactics and conduct on the sidelines, with some already writing him off as a failed appointment just nine days and two games into his tenure.
Celtic fan lays into Nancy on talkSPORT amid O’Neill comparison
Celtic were behind in an instant against Roma as Liam Scales nodded into his own net, with Brighton loanee Evan Ferguson then scoring a quick brace to confirm the visitors’ win before the half-time whistle had even sounded.
As well as the team’s performances, some supporters are unhappy with the Frenchman’s attitude to managing the team by using tactics boards and wearing green trainers.
Speaking live on talkSPORT on Friday (12 December), one fan slammed Nancy and insisted that the club would have been better off sticking with interim boss O’Neill.
“As soon as I watched this guy’s first press conference, I had him marked as a waffle merchant. He just waffles. He goes on about connections and positivity, using all these buzzwords. It’s just management speak, utter waffle.
“When we were 2-0 down against Hearts, he was throwing everything at it, he looked to me as if he didn’t have a clue what he was doing. Last night (Thursday), we were torn to shreds by a good side.
“I doubt we would have lost the Hearts game under Martin O’Neill, and I doubt we would have been absolutely destroyed against Roma.
“The Celtic players looked as if they didn’t know what they were doing, and I’m sorry, but that is on the manager.”
St Mirren cup final is already key to Nancy’s future
Nancy is no stranger to lifting silverware after he led Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup in 2023 and the Leagues Cup in 2024.
He has the chance to win his first trophy as Hoops manager this Sunday (14 December) as they take on St Mirren in the League Cup final at Hampden Park.

Celtic are the current holders of the trophy, and Nancy will know that his future in charge could already rest on winning the game and restoring some feel-good factor among the fans and his players.
Not only do they need to win, but the players also have to look like they understand the tactics the Frenchman is trying to implement, as the biggest concern for many has been their desperately poor performances in the two matches that he has overseen so far.
