Wilfried Nancy has ‘blown it’ at Celtic amid ‘sacked immediately’ claim

Wilfried Nancy is fighting for his job at Celtic after Sunday’s shock Scottish League Cup final defeat to St Mirren.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen and Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who thinks Nancy is facing an uphill challenge already at Celtic.

Nancy is already under pressure at Celtic just three games into his tenure following Sunday’s incredible 3-1 Scottish League Cup final reverse against minnows St Mirren, with many fans calling for him to be sacked immediately.

Criticism has already been aimed at Nancy, who has been insistent on implementing his three at the back formation at a crucial part of the season.

‘Jury very much out’ on Wilfried Nancy

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks Nancy has been too quick to change Celtic’s style.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes Nancy has “blown” his chance to make a good first impression at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I really hope Nancy comes good, and he gets his formations right, and he gets the squad motivated.

But it’s not the best start and the question marks are already there and it’s so tough to really pull things back in Glasgow and understand that pressure that you’re under. And it just seems strange to come and change your formation without having settled in, your squad trained properly, understand the players, the whole thing, and work on it before you made that change.

So I’m afraid the jury’s very much out, and as I said at the start, you only get one chance to make a first impression and he’s blown it.”

Martin O’Neill could make shock Celtic return

Celtic may have to bring Martin O’Neill back to the club if they decide to sack Nancy this season, following a successful stint as interim boss.

Nancy’s start does not get any easier with three of their next four games all away from Celtic Park, before they begin the new year against rivals Rangers.

Hearts have extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points whilst Celtic were in League Cup final action, meaning Nancy cannot afford another defeat.
