Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has backed the club’s manager Rafa Benitez to keep them in the Premier League this season.
The Magpies are currently 11th in the table but damaging 1-0 defeats to Bournemouth and Burnley have raised some concerns.
Shearer insisted that it will be a hard season for Newcastle fans but said he is convinced that Benitez is the right man to keep his beloved club in the Premier League.
“Rafa will make the difference, there’s no doubt about that,” Shearer told Coral, during a live Q&A on their Facebook page earlier today.
“If Newcastle are to stay up this season, which I think they will, then a lot of it will come from Rafa because of who he is and what he is – a very good manager.”
Shearer also said that his former club have not got a good enough squad to challenge for a place in the top eight, but was convinced Benitez can get the best out of his current group of players to keep them in the Premier League.
He also said that the former Real Madrid boss would benefit from having proper funds to strengthen his side and that the club need a striker who is guaranteed to score 15 goals in a season.
Benitez was tasked with keeping Newcastle in the Premier League when he replaced former boss Steve McClaren in March 2016.
He could not keep them up but the Spaniard decided to remain at St. James’ Park and helped the club secure promotion back to the Premier League and win the Championship title last season.
Benitez will be hoping his side can return to winning ways when Newcastle return to Premier League action against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
