Will new UK weather warnings affect Premier League and Championship fixture list on New Year’s Day?

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for the United Kingdom at the beginning of 2026, with several big matches to take place.

Coventry City are expected to be promoted from the Championship this season, and will hope to avoid the weather as they look to bounce back against Charlton on Thursday.

Frank Lampard‘s side fell to defeat against Ipswich Town on Monday, with Jack Clarke and Wes Burns finding the net for the visitors.

In the Premier League, Tottenham are set to face Brentford in a difficult away match, as they look to build on a positive result against Crystal Palace.

Thomas Frank remains under pressure at Tottenham, but would have been delighted by his side’s performance at Selhurst Park.

Met Office release yellow warning

Elsewhere on New Year’s Day, Palace will play Fulham and Liverpool will take on Leeds United, while a key match in the title race takes place at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester City will travel to Sunderland as they look to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

On Tuesday, Arsenal smashed Aston Villa 4-1, sending a huge statement to the rest of the league about their intentions this season.

In the Championship, promotion chasers Middlesbrough will travel to Derby County, while Ryan Mason will attempt to extend his stay at West Brom by beating Swansea City in South Wales.

The Met Office warning for New Year's Day

Twelve games will take place in the Championship on New Year’s Day, but officials everywhere will be keeping an eye on the weather after the Met Office released a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

Luckily, the area of effect is currently constricted to the most northerly region of Scotland, although it is worth keeping an eye out for any changes in the weather.

Weather warnings threaten to disrupt the rest of the week

The Met Office have released a yellow weather warning for snow and ice that stretches across London and into Wales on Friday.

Luckily, there are no games set to be played in the Premier League or the Championship, but those travelling the night before for games to be played on Saturday should be wary.
