Will Still backed to recreate EFL history after major developments

Will Still has been named as the favourite to take over at League One club Wigan Athletic after Ryan Lowe was sacked.

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Gary Caldwell is among the front-runners for the Wigan job, with decision-makers at the Brick Community Stadium looking for a saviour.

The Latics are 22nd in League One and in serious danger of relegation after seven consecutive league games without victory.

Southampton sacked Still in November, after the Englishman won just four games in four months at St Mary’s Stadium.

Still has been linked with a return to the Championship since, but has been unable to find a new club as of yet.

Will and Edward Still could create new history

Still had been among the favourites for a return to the Championship at the start of February, when Javi Gracia suddenly resigned from his role at Watford.

The Spaniard’s side had been in poor form, but he had retained the full backing of the owners before stepping down in a surprise decision.

Nobody expected who Watford would appoint to replace Gracia, either. On Monday, a club statement confirmed that Still’s brother, Edward Still, has taken over at Vicarage Road.

The 35-year-old’s last two roles came as an assistant manager at RC Lens and at Anderlecht, where he briefly took over as a caretaker manager.

Still’s longest managerial role came at Belgian top-flight side Royal Charleroi, where he oversaw a sixth-placed finish in the 2021-22 season before departing during the following campaign.

Should his brother be appointed by Wigan, they would appear to have become the first pair of brothers to simultaneously manage two different EFL clubs since Jack and Bobby Charlton in 1973.

Still has been named the favourite at 5/4 to take over at Wigan by one major bookmaker, with Gary Caldwell (7/4) and Ruaidhri Higgins (2/1) also firmly in the running.

Other notable EFL management brothers

In the 1970s, Jack Charlton was managing Middlesbrough, while Bobby Charlton oversaw Preston North End in the same league.

There have been few other examples of brothers in management, but Danny and Nick Cowley have been a constant.

The latter has been the former’s assistant at several clubs, including Lincoln City, Portsmouth and now Colchester United.

The U’s are currently 11th in League Two, and will hope to make a late push towards the play-off spots.
