Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Carl Winchester after he produced a ‘man of the match’ display for Sunderland at Accrington Stanley.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said he’s been “very impressed” with the 27-year-old who has proved to be a “very clever signing”.

Winchester produced an eye-catching display on Wednesday night, as the Black Cats continued their push for promotion with a 2-0 win over the ‘Owd Reds.

He completed 90 per cent of his attempted passes and made 15 ball recoveries in what was his 11th appearance for the club. (Wyscout)

The Black Cats signed Winchester from Forest Green Rover in January on a two-and-a-half year deal.

When asked for his assessment of Winchester’s form, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs:

“I think he has been brilliant. I have watched Sunderland a lot lately, live and on TV and I have been very impressed with him.

“He is a no-nonsense midfielder who goes under the radar at times. He is now getting rewarded with recognition for his performances and last night he was man of the match.

“Winchester is one of those players you need in your side, someone who keeps it simple.

“I like it when he plays alongside Scowen because he gives him a little bit more license to get forward.

“He has adapted to the league very well. He looks like a very clever signing.”
