Winks told to ‘grow a set’ as he’s ‘punished’ for breaking Tottenham ranks after journalist’s update – pundit
Frank McAvennie has backed Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to punish Harry Winks after he broke ranks at Tottenham.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told the midfielder to stop moaning to the media.
It emerged on Tuesday that Dele Alli had been left out of the Spurs squad to face Burnley tonight and Evening Standard reporter Dan Kilpatrick further reported today (Wednesday) Winks, 26, has also missed out even though he is not injured.
Winks was handed a rare start for last week’s Europa Conference League game against Vitesse.
Spurs failed to put up much of a fight in their 1-0 loss and after the game, the midfielder spoke to the media.
Asked about Nuno’s decision to only send half of his squad to Belgium, Winks told Sky Sports “it is tough, we’re meant to be a team.”
McAvennie insists Winks’ omission is a punishment after he broke ranks last week.
“That should stay behind closed doors,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He should grow a set and tell the manager that to his face. That is how it should be done.
“Maybe he did have a word and he was knocked back, that could be why he went off moaning to the press.
“I think he will be punished for that, it’s not on. But with these things, there is always something more.
“I want to see how this develops because you can’t have players breaking ranks on you.”

Winks has been on the fringes of the Tottenham team this season.
He has only made six appearances this season.
In other news, a club insider has named the Tottenham 11 that will line up against Burnley tonight.
