Wolves backed to agree Adam Webster signing – O’Rourke

Wolves have been backed to complete the signing of Adam Webster from Brighton in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 29-year-old centre-back could be available on loan given his lack of playing time under Fabian Hurzeler.

Aston Villa star Diego Carlos has also been linked with the switch to Molineux amid speculation over his future at Villa Park, with Wolves ideally looking to sign two centre-backs this month.

However, Unai Emery’s side are unlikely to entertain talks over the defender’s exit unless they can bring in a replacement given his role in the team.

Meanwhile, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Wolves are in advanced talks to sign RC Lens defender Kevin Danso as the French outfit look to balance the books.

O’Rourke confirmed that Danso is the number-one target for Wolves this month, but Webster also “ticks a lot of boxes” and the club will aim to get both deals over the line.

New Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has prioritised the addition of new centre-backs following his arrival as he has inherited the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League.

Gary O’Neil’s dismissal last month came largely as a result of Wolves’ shocking defensive record, brought on largely by a lack of options in defensive areas.

The former boss had been critical of the club’s transfer activity after star centre-back Max Kilman was sold to West Ham during the summer without an adequate replacement.

However, upon Pereira’s arrival, the new manager is immediately seeking to resolve the issues surrounding defensive cover and the club are prepared to move quickly to back him.

Webster’s availability has highlighted him as a key target, having made just five appearances for Brighton so far this season as he remains largely on the fringes of the squad.

A loan deal is seen as ideal for both parties in the short-term given Wolves’ lack of financial muscle, while the Seagulls no longer see him as part of their plans.

The threat of relegation at Molineux has forced the board’s hand and they are now expected to back Pereira to the best of their ability in the window despite financial concerns.
