Wolves backed to accelerate Joao Gomes sale plan after Man United swoop
Manchester United are believed to be exploring their midfield options ahead of the January transfer window.
Joao Gomes has emerged as a target for Man United despite Wolves’ struggles in the Premier League this season.
The 24-year-old midfielder has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season for the West Midlands side, who are rooted to the bottom of the top-flight table on just two points.
Football Insider revealed on 27 November Wolves could demand £50million to sell Gomes in January following Man United’s interest.
Wolves are expected to focus on sales in next month’s transfer window given there is now little chance of new manager Rob Edwards keeping them up this season.
Man United could take advantage of Wolves transfer dilemma
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Wolves could bring forward their plans to sell the likes of Gomes in January.
It has been suggested Matheus Cunha could be key in helping Gomes join Man United after the forward moved to Old Trafford from Molineux over the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about whether Ruben Amorim’s side could take advantage of Wolves’ situation, Borson said: “In simple terms, yes. Maybe they want to sell him in the window from the end of the season to 30 June.
“It’s going to depend what happens in their next few games. But look at the games they’ve got. I mean, there’s almost no chance that they can do anything with the best will in the world.
“They’ve got Liverpool and Manchester United away, and they’ve got Brentford at home. Those are the games before 1 January. I mean, maybe they get three points, right? That’ll have them on five points on 1 January.
“They would need something like let’s say 30 points from the last 19 games. Obviously, it’s not impossible, but it’s pretty unlikely.”
Wolves lost 2-1 to Arsenal on Saturday (13 December) after Yerson Mosquera put through his own net in the dying moments at the Emirates Stadium, with Edwards’s side now 14 points from safety.
Wolves are in ‘planning mode’ for Premier League relegation
Borson revealed Wolves could bring their planned player sales forward to January as speculation continues around the likes of Gomes.
“I just think they’re going to be, with the best will in the world, in a planning mode for next season, and that next season is in the Championship,” said Borson.
“It just means that you’re just bringing forward all of your planning for sales and everything else because the second half of the season is largely a write-off.”
Wolves’ next fixture sees them take on Brentford on Saturday (20 December) as they go in pursuit of their first Premier League victory of the season.
