‘Wolves could be hit by new blow’ after latest from China – boardroom source

Wolves owners Fosun have faced criticism from their fanbase in recent years after a perceived lack of investment from the Chinese conglomerate.

The Molineux club sold star duo Max Kilman and Pedro Neto last summer (2024) and now sit 17th in the Premier League table.

In a move announced in December, Wolves have partnered with Chinese second tier club Nantong Zhiyun.

The Midlands club said: “Expertise will be shared in areas such as football skills, tactics, and club operations, ensuring both clubs benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience.”

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has given his reaction with that partnership now well underway.

Wolves’ China partnership could be a ‘distraction’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed the new link could actually be a “distraction” for Wolves.

The former Everton CEO claimed there is unlikely to be a football benefit for the Midlands club.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is a club north of Shanghai, and they’ve only been going since 2016.

“It’s a relatively new club. They’re in the second division in China but have had a quick start and have done well.

“It’s more about Wolves giving their experience and knowledge to Nantong, rather any young talent coming from there.

“It’s also a political play from Fosun, who are being seen as giving back to Chinese domestic football.

“There’s a political dimension.

“In terms of a real footballing benefit, I think Nantong will see more of that than Wolves.

“I don’t see it being a benefit for Wolves, but if they have the right people in China – then there’s a chance.

“It could also be a distraction if it takes away management time. It can be a double-edged sword.”

Matheus Cunha ‘wants to leave Wolves for bigger club

Football Insider revealed on 4 February Wolves star Matheus Cunha is keen to play for a bigger club despite signing a new deal.

The Brazil international penned a new four-and-a-half-year deal this month after registering 12 goals and four assists in 25 appearances this season.

Arsenal explored a move for Cunha in the January window and could reignite their interest in the off-season, with the forward available via a £62.5million release clause.
