Wolves could have greater spending power to make new signings – Stefan Borson

Wolves could potentially have more spending power as the season goes on if they are on target to finish higher than their expectations.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the West Midlands club are right to be approaching the transfer market with a degree of caution as they are likely to be close to the spending limit.

Wolves have sold former captain Max Kilman to West Ham for £40million this summer, while star player Pedro Neto has joined Chelsea in a £54million deal.

But that hasn’t helped Gary O’Neil’s side drastically improve their spending power after The Telegraph reported on 19 August they only have a £20million transfer budget remaining ahead of the 30 August deadline.

Wolves have made four new additions this summer after bringing in Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima, Tommy Doyle and Jorgen Strand Larsen on loan, with those signings costing less than £30million.

Wolves taking sensible approach after points deduction fears

But Borson suggested the club are currently taking a sensible approach to their profit and sustainability (PSR) situation, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

He told Football Insider: “If they have a fantastic season and they know that they are going to finish five or 10 places higher than their budget, that would give them a bit more flexibility to spend as we go through the season.

“But I suspect on their budget and their base-case analysis, they are quite close to the £105million limit.

Wolves

“That would explain why they are being cautious and that’s how they should be.

“That is the way that sensible clubs should approach PSR.”
