Wolves ‘expected’ to spend big in January amid ‘£40m’ reveal

Wolves have been backed to take a chance and splash up to £40million on new signings in the January transfer window.

The Old Gold sit rock bottom of the Premier League as it stands, already eight points adrift of safety.

Rob Edwards was appointed as the new Wolves manager on 12 November, replacing Vitor Pereira at Molineux.

The 42-year-old will take charge of his first game on Saturday (22 November) as the Midlands side face Crystal Palace.

Wolves could give Rob Edwards the ammunition to stay up

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Wolves have no other option than to back Edwards in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Midlands giants could spend around £40m on new signings, to give their new manager the ammunition to start a survival charge.

Wolves lost the likes of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri in the summer, and failed to bring in adequate replacements.

Wyness added that it will be tempting for Fosun to “roll the dice”, but only if they are still in touching distance of survival when the window reopens.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’ve got no other option but to back Edwards. They’ve got to do what they can to give him a chance.

“I’m sure with him coming on board, he did ask, what have I got available to me in January? I don’t think it’ll be a lot, but certainly they’re going to have to do something.

“Wolves are one of the clubs that will have to spend in January. I expect it to be a busy window, and Wolves will be one of those clubs that will be looking to do that.

“I think a lot will depend on the next three or four games and where they actually are before the window starts. If they’re within touching distance, then of course you’d expect them to really go for it. But if they may feel that if they’re too far behind, there may be no point. It could all be over by Christmas in that sense.

“But it will be very tempting for Fosun to roll the dice and maybe spend £30m to £40m in January and try and give Edwards the ammunition to do it.”

Wolves eye double signing in January

Edwards is targeting a striker and a winger signing at Wolves in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Unsurprisingly, the Midlands side have scored the fewest goals out of any top-flight team, finding the back of the net just seven times this season.

With the January transfer window approaching, sources say that Wolves want to sign a centre forward and a wide attacker to aid their Premier League survival push.
