Wolves have already made decision on Rob Edwards’ long-term future – ‘the penny’s dropped’

Rob Edwards has a huge task on his hands keeping Wolves in the Premier League and the club may have already come to a decision on his future at Molineux.

On Wednesday (12 November), Edwards was officially appointed by Wolves following a chaotic and controversial week.

Middlesbrough initially refused to give the Midlands side permission to speak with the 42-year-old, but eventually relented after the former Luton Town boss expressed his desire to move.

Edwards must now produce a mini-miracle at Wolves in order to save them from relegation to the Championship.

Wolves are building for the long-term under Rob Edwards

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Edwards is set for a long-term spell at Wolves, regardless of whether or not he keeps them up this season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the former Boro manager will be retained by the Old Gold, even if they are relegated to the Championship.

The Englishman has previous experience of success in the second tier, guiding Luton to play-off glory and promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season.

Wyness added that the fact that Edwards is building a house in Birmingham is further evidence that he will be given time by the Wolves owners.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’re looking at him longer term, rather than just avoiding relegation. The whole thing starts to make sense when you look at it through that prism.

“I think he’s got the affinity with the club. Everybody says he’s a very good coach. He seems to be a very strong personality, handles the media quite well. If they give him a chance to rebuild a bit in January, can they go on a run like last year? He might still have a chance of getting them to stay up.

“However, with only two points on the board after 11 games, that would be a miracle escape. He will be Houdini, not Rob Edwards, if he can get that one done. But still, he’ll have a chance.

“I think Wolves have already decided that if they do go down, he gets to stay, rebuild, and they will be a power in the championship to try and come back up. So I think it’s much longer term than just parachuting him in to try and avoid relegation.

“When I heard that he was building a new house in Birmingham, the penny dropped for me that, okay, this is longer term.”

Wolves’ January transfer plans after Rob Edwards appointment

Meanwhile, Wolves are expected to back Edwards with the necessary funds to make new signings in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider

With their top-flight status is hanging in the balance, sources say that the hierarchy at the Midlands side are willing to fund new arrivals.

Wolves were the second-highest spenders in the Premier League behind Manchester City last January, having backed Vitor Pereira with three new signings.
