Wolves next manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer update today
Wolves have added Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to their shortlist of potential options to replace Gary O’Neil as manager, sources have told Football Insider.
O’Neil was dismissed from his role following a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at home, after which the club released an official statement to confirm his exit on 15 December.
This came following a disastrous start to the season in which Wolves have dropped to 19th place after winning just two of their 16 Premier League games, drawing three and losing 11.
Their calamitous defensive performances showed no signs of improving, and while the board were keen to back O’Neil, his position quickly became untenable.
Meanwhile, the former Man United manager was spotted in attendance at Molineux for the defeat to Ipswich, ramping up speculation about his reason for being there.
Reports have explained he was in attendance as a guest of Ipswich rather than for managerial talks.
However, sources have told Football Insider that Solskjaer has now thrown his hat in the ring to take over from O’Neil, having been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in November 2021.
Wolves considering appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in new twist
Solskjaer’s time as Man United manager is said to have made him an interesting target for Wolves, as members of the board believe his Premier League experience could be key.
The Norwegian managed 149 games during his spell at Old Trafford and remains highly thought of despite his sack in 2021.
During that spell, he won 78, drew 33 and lost 38 games, averaging 1.79 points per game during a turbulent spell for the club.
However, some senior figures at Wolves believe he could be the best option to get their form back on track and inspire a dejected group of players.
His availability is also said to be a boost for the Black Country side, who are reluctant to fork out a compensation fee in their search for a replacement.

The current financial situation at Molineux remains unstable and is expected to limit their ability to fork out on poaching a manager from another club as things stand.
In other news, Wolves could be forced to agree big-money January sale.
