Wolves player ratings v Aston Villa: Defensive trio get 8/10

By Will Butcher

Football Insider rates the Wolves players after they secured a 1-0 win in a feisty Midlands derby against rivals Aston Villa at Molineux.

Carl Ikeme 7 – Very little to do in between the sticks for Wolves, as Villa’s attack was nullified by the Wolves defence.

Connor Coady 8 – Eye-catching performance away from his normal position of central midfield, as he kept Leandro Bacuna quiet on Wolves’ right flank.

Richard Stearman 8 – Strong, combative performance alongside Batth as the duo continue their impressive partnership at the back.

Danny Batth 8 – Led by example as captain, Batth tidied up a number of loose balls and put his body on the line to secure three points for Wolves from centre-back.

Matt Doherty 7 – Looks a very bright player on the left side of defence, as he kept Albert Adomah quiet. Good going forward too, Doherty played a pivotal part in his side’s win.

Dave Edwards 7 – Broke Villa’s play up well at the base of the Wolves midfield with a number of interceptions and tackles against the likes of Ross McCormack and Aaron Tshibola.

Jack Price 7 – Complimented Edwards no-holds-barred, box-to-box efforts in the middle of the park with an intelligent, simple game at alongside his midfield partner.

Helder Costa 6 – Did little against Steve Bruce’s side despite a fantastic season at Molineux so far. Showed glimpses of the brilliance that he has in his locker.

Joe Mason 8 – Predatory instinct from 10 yards out as stroked home a loose ball past Sam Johnstone, who dropped Nouha Dicko’s cross in the first half. Dictated Wolves’ attacks from the number 10 role.

Ivan Cavaleiro 6 – The Portuguese winger possesses obvious talent but continues to struggle to do anything with it as Alan Hutton kept him quiet.

Nouha Dicko 8 – Worked his socks off as he ran the channels for Paul Lambert’s side and earned vital territory throughout the match. Decision making needs sharpening.
