Wolves star who could have joined Champions League club will surely curse Gary O’Neil

Wolves are looking to become the first team in Premier League history to survive after taking just two points from 11 matches.

Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira after their 3-0 defeat to Fulham on November 1, and have since appointed their successor to the Portuguese.

Rob Edwards left Middlesbrough to join Wolves and was officially unveiled as their new manager on November 12.

The 42-year-old inherits a squad that is down in the dumps confidence-wise, and will need to overhaul an eight-point deficit to move level on points with 17th-place Burnley.

Worryingly, Football Insider revealed on November 13 that striker Jorgen Strand Larsen wants to leave Wolves after almost joining Newcastle United in the summer, while another player perhaps wished he had left sooner.

Gary O’Neil denied Hwang Hee-chan’s move to Marseille

Hwang Hee-chan’s stock was sky high after he matched Matheus Cunha’s total of 12 Premier League goals at Wolves in 2024/25.

As a result, the 29-year-old was linked with a move out of Molineux, and the Old Gold even rejected a £21million bid from Marseille, insisting he wasn’t for sale.

Gary O’Neil was a huge fan of the South Korean international, seeing the forward as a vital part of his system.

But when O’Neil was sacked in December 2024, Hwang fell out of favour at Wolves as he didn’t fit into Pereira’s plans.

Hwang only made five Premier League starts in 2024/25, becoming a peripheral figure in Wolverhampton, while continuing his downward spiral this term.

After finding the net just once in eight appearances, the former RB Leipzig man is a shadow of the player he once was, and he may regret not forcing a way out of Wolves in 2024.

Since seeing their bid get rejected, Marseille have qualified for the Champions League and are currently two points behind PSG in second place in Ligue 1, while the Old Gold are nailed on for relegation.

Rob Edwards must get Hwang firing

To stand any chance of escaping the relegation places, Edwards must get the South Korean international firing.

Hwang can benefit from Pereira being sacked and Edwards taking the job, as the new boss prefers a two-man striker formation.

That means Hwang could have a chance to play alongside Strand Larsen, perhaps utilising his pace and power to fashion opportunities.

Ultimately, with his stock taking a tumble and his contract expiring in June 2028, the forward will have to knuckle down and do his best to earn a summer transfer.
