‘Wolves to agree big-money Matheus Cunha deal after PSR issues’

Wolves have faced issues complying with the Premier League’s spending rules over the past couple of years despite making several big-money sales.

The West Midlands side were believed to be close to the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit last season, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

The sales of Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves and Nathan Collins in the summer of 2023 helped get them over the line and avoid a potential breach.

Manchester United are now preparing a move to sign Matheus Cunha this summer, with the forward having a £62.5million release clause in his contract.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Wolves likely need to sell Cunha to improve their PSR position.

Wolves moved their accounting deadline from 31 May to 30 June earlier this year, opening up the possibility for them to sell a player before they submit their accounts for 2024-25.

The club’s revenue increased from £168.6million in 2022-23 to £177.7million last season, while their losses reduced from £67.2million to £14.3million across the same period.

Wolves made behind-the-scenes move to avoid PSR blow

Borson insisted Wolves likely moved their accounting period due to their PSR issues as they consider selling Cunha ahead of the summer transfer window.

He told Football Insider: “He seems to be a good player.

“It’s good for Wolves. I think they need that money for PSR.

“They recently moved their financial year-end to 30 June.

“You would think that would be so that they could bank that profit within this current year.

“You would think that there was a reason why they needed to do that, so it works for all parties.

“I think United will buy him.”

Vitor Pereira makes Wolves transfer demand

Football Insider revealed on 15 April Vitor Pereira wants to be heavily backed by Wolves chiefs in the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese manager fears losing players like Cunha, Joao Gomes and Rayan Ait-Nouri without suitable replacements could put his side on the back foot next season.

Pereira is set to open talks over a contract extension, with his current deal at Molineux expiring in June 2026.

Wolves have moved up to 13th in the Premier League table after recording six victories in a row.
