Wolves told to appoint manager who is thriving at rival club after Rob Edwards update

Wolves’ winless start to the Premier League season should not put off potential candidates for the managerial vacancy.

That is according to David James, who has given his verdict on the Midlands outfit after Vitor Pereira was sacked by Wolves 10 games into the Premier League season having accumulated just two points.

Wolves’ 3-0 defeat at Fulham was Pereira’s final game in charge of the club after being appointed as manager last December.

Pereira was able to keep Wolves in the Premier League after a similarly poor start under Gary O’Neil, but tensions amongst the fanbase suggested that they did not want the Portuguese to be given a chance to turn fortunes around this season.

Wolves can survive drop, claims David James

Speaking on The Football Daily, [3 November], James believes Wolves can still turn their season around under a new manager despite an eight-point gap between them and safety.

James called it a “great job” before saying: “I don’t think the players are bad players, there is a bit to them when there’s a lot of showboating without end product which is frustrating, but I think with the right manager I’m just looking at last season, Pereira had a six game win run before the end of the season.

And lost the last four games so if you add the 10 games now to the last four that’s 14 games without a win.

I think they’ve got the players to get enough, we talk about the promoted sides doing well, Burnley and Leeds are sat just above the relegation zone.

Burnley have basically beaten the promoted teams and the bad teams in the league so far in those first ten games.

I think there’s enough there to get above them, whether or not the likes of West Ham have got enough to get out of it but I think for a manager with 28 games to do something half decent.”

Wolves shouldn’t follow West Ham lead

James has also delivered his verdict on which sort of manager Wolves should be approaching, with Middlesborough boss and former player at the club Rob Edwards linked with the job.

If Wolves go for a tried and failed manager, and I say that respectfully, someone who hasn’t been able to hold down a job, similar to what West Ham have done time and time again is bring in managers who have sort of been on the waiting list somewhere around the world as apposed to someone progressing,” James said.

“If you look at Brentford’s situation, I know they have promoted from within, but you get someone who is even inexperienced but doing well with a group of players somewhere then I think that would be a better move for Wolves and if they can get someone who is doing fantastic somewhere else then that may be even better.”
