It seems likely that 21-year-old St Mirren midfielder is set to join Celtic in the transfer window, with BBC Sport reporting that the player will be signed for a six-figure deal worth £300,000, then loaned back to the Paisley side for the rest of the season.
Whilst the player undeniably looks a decent prospect, and 10 goals so far this season is a good return from midfield, he simply is not the player that the Hoops need to sign at this moment in time and Brendan Rodgers should pull the plug on trying to sign him.
The Bhoys need players that will take them that extra step in Europe, where they actually compete in the Champions League group stages and aren’t hammered in most of the games.
With all due respect to Morgan, he isn’t the type of player who is coming in to make the difference in Europe, and that’s what Celtic need right now.
The other puzzling aspect about the proposed signing is that the Hoops currently have far too many midfielders. It’s the most populated area of the squad. Perhaps some players will be sold in January and by the time Morgan arrives at the club they’ll be space for him in the squad.
The other proposed January signing – Marvin Commper, who was in Scotland to complete a medical with the club, as reported by the Daily Record – makes sense, as he has experience of playing in Germany and Italy.
Morgan doesn’t fit into that category and he may end up another Ryan Christie or Liam Henderson, who have spent most of their Celtic careers on-loan at other clubs.
