Woodgate: This Tottenham ace is one of the PL’s best

By Dominic Toner

Ex-Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate believes that Toby Alderweireld is among the top three centre-backs in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has established himself as the first-choice defender at White Hart Lane and is regarded as one of the best in the division.

He moved to White Hart Lane in 2015 and helped the north London club finish third in the Premier League, something he will hope to eclipse this season.

Woodgate has revealed how impressed he is with Alderweireld and ranks him as one of the best in England.

“I like Alderweireld, and I’d put him in the top three centre-backs in the Premier League,” Woodgate said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

Alderweireld first played in the Premier League during a loan spell with Southampton and impressed a number of top sides in England.

Spurs managed to secure his signature from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and he has become the heartbeat of the side.

Mauricio Pochettino has used the centre-back 62 times since he moved to Spurs and he is an ever-present in the backline.

The Belgian international has built a formidable partnership alongside team-mate Jan Vertonghen, who he also plays alongside for Belgium.

Spurs are currently 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea and will need Alderweireld at his best if they are to claw back that advantage in the title race.

In other Tottenham news, Pochettino has sent a warning to Watford’s mascot and told him to steer clear of the club’s angry player.
