Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez has said that the Magpies’ home form is set to play the deciding factor in whether the club can avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.
The Spaniard and his team mates have only won four times in front of their own fans at St James’ Park this season, and ended what was nearly a four month wait for victory on Tyneside with their win over Manchester United last Sunday.
With five more games to come at their own ground, Perez says that the Magpies will have to pick up as many points as possible between now and the end of the season, recognising that their rivals for survival are showing their strength in front of their supporters.
He told the Shields Gazette: “This is the first win since October against Palace, so that means a lot. We have to be stronger at home. That’s it.
“You see how the other teams are winning at home. We know it and we’re working on it.
“We’ve had good moments, bad moments, like every team. At the minute, we’re in a good position, and we could be in a better one. Still we have 11 games to play.”
The three points against Manchester United helped the club leap from the drop zone, which they had slipped into after their rivals’ results, and into 13th, now sitting two points off Southampton in the first of the three relegation positions at the foot of the table.
Perez has been a regular member of the Magpies’ squad this season, with 26 appearances across all competitions, and has managed to net four goals as well as chip in with two further assists for his team mates.
In other Newcastle United news, the club have committed to a £2million fee for an international attacker.
