Hurst: This Tottenham player should captain England next summer

By George Brooks

England World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst believes Tottenham striker Harry Kane has what it takes to captain the national side at the World Cup next summer.

The 24-year-old has been in sensational form for club and country this season with 17 goals in 18 appearances.

The Three Lions booked their place at next year’s tournament in Russia last month and Kane played a big part in his country’s qualification.

He has scored four goals in his last four appearances for England and captained the side for the first time in the 2-2 draw against Scotland back in June, where he scored an injury-time equaliser.

Kane had to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s recent England squad through injury and his Spurs teammate Eric Dier captained the side in the goalless draw with Germany on Friday.

Hurst, who scored a famous hat-trick for England against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley believes Kane is the right man for the captaincy next summer.

“Harry Kane as a person, how he handles himself on and off the pitch, I have no argument about him captaining the team,” said Hurst, as quoted by The Mirror.

“Being captain is a huge honour. Traditionally teams are captained by central defenders and keepers. I’m not sure that has to be the case.

“He’s also a great leader on and off the pitch.”

Kane has proven that he can score goals from any position this season and Hurst believes that he is currently the best striker in world football.

“He works up front, he’s aggressive in his all-round play and you couldn’t pick anyone better worldwide. He’s a fantastic player in a very difficult position.”

Tottenham currently have Kane, Dier, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Danny Rose in contention to make Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side return to Premier League action against north London rivals Arsenal on Saturday.
