'Would be 2 great signings' - Exclusive: McLeish reacts as Villa move for striker after Watkins
Bournemouth forward Josh King would be a “great signing” for Aston Villa after the capture of Ollie Watkins, according to Alex McLeish.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa boss suggests that the 28-year-old would be a welcome addition to the squad after their struggles up front last season.
As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday, Dean Smith could bring in another centre-forward after Watkins’ arrival and Villa have made a move for King as he heads into the final year of his contract.
It is understood the Cherries are demanding £20million as they look to recoup as much money possible following their relegation to the Championship.
McLeish believes that proven talents like King could prove crucial in keeping Villa out of the relegation battle next season and suggests they should make a concrete move before the window shuts.
Asked about the prospect of signing King as well as Watkins, McLeish told Football Insider: “I think it would be two great signings, yeah, I really do.

“Villa will be looking to avoid the pitfall season they had last year and were lurking around that bottom three for a long time. It’s pretty horrible on your nerves.
“They will be looking to bolster straight away, hit the ground running straight away, get themselves into a safe position within 10 games or so and try and do as well as they possibly can and keep getting themselves to a higher position if possible.
“With these kind of signings, two guys who know their way about the English penalty boxes. You get a lot of foreigners and it takes them a while – Samatta came from Genk and these guys take a wee while to settle in.
“Those two guys are ready-made, they know the game in England. King has been around a wee bit and it’s up to Ollie to go to another level.”
