Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Noel Whelan admits he is delighted to hear that the Leeds United players were arguing among themselves after the disappointing draw against Luton Town.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, ripped into the Whites’ stars and insists there should have been some harsh words exchanged after what he deemed an unacceptable display.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Kalvin Phillips admitted that the squad were frustrated with the performance against the Hatters and that they were arguing among themselves during and after the game.

Whelan admits he is actually pleased to hear the midfielder’s honest admission about the mood behind closed doors, suggesting that passion and anger has been missing in the past.

“Why is this something new? This should be regular, if you lose a football match there should be questions asked,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“If someone’s performance is not up to scratch, they should be questioned and there should be these arguments. It just shows you care. Back in the day, people would be literally strung up against the wall for not doing their job right, that’s just part and parcel.

“I want to see more of that, quite frankly. I’m glad they’re having these discussions, I’m glad they’re falling out with one another at times for the sake of the result, it’s important.

“I’m glad that the passion is there quite frankly, for Kalvin to come out and say that, I love the honesty. I think people would like to hear that. There’s been too many occasions where we’ve wanted that and not heard that, where we’ve wanted that anger.

“I think it’s healthy to have that in the dressing room. There should be questions asked after Luton because it wasn’t good enough, by a ******* long stretch by the way.”
