Danny Mills says it is looking “ominous” for Aston Villa in their battle against relegation from the Premier League.

The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that Dean Smith’s men are in a “dogfight” for their top-flight place after their return this season.

The Villans currently sit outside of the relegation zone, one point ahead of West Ham and two points ahead of Watford who are 18th and 19th respectively.

Mills admits that he is not overly confident in the Villans‘ ability to stay up this season but says there are plenty of other teams who could finish below them.

Mills told Football Insider: “Villa are going to be in it, it’s going to be a bit of a dogfight for them until the end of the season. They’ve got themselves into a cup final, how distracting is that going to be for them?

“They needed help, they lost to Bournemouth, Bournemouth were down to 10 men for a large portion of the game and Villa have lost. Villa need something, they need to start scoring goals.

“It’s looking very, very ominous for them now. (Would you put a pound on Villa staying up?) I might go with 50p, it’s going to be very, very tight down there at the bottom of the table.

“Norwich are gone, I don’t see them getting back from it, but Watford, West Ham, Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton could get sucked into it now. Above that, I think Burnley are looking at two wins, Palace above that will be fine.”

Villa’s next game sees them take on Tottenham at home, with the two sides having already met on the opening day of the season.
