Alan Hutton has admitted he was blown away by the stature and physique of Nikola Katic as he hits the Rangers comeback trail.
The former Gers defender and lifelong fan at Ibrox, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was astounded by how much muscle the centre-back had built up during his time on the sidelines.
The 24-year-old took to his personal Instagram account last week to post a picture of himself in the gym at the club’s Auchenhowie training ground after he was sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury over the summer.
Steven Gerrard has refused to offer a possible return date for the centre-back, with the initial assessment putting a comeback anywhere between seven and 12 months.
The one-cap Croatia international has played 59 times for Rangers but has not featured at all this season.
Hutton was left in awe of Katic’s physical development during his time out of action but admitted he did not want to see the defender rushed back too soon after what was a serious injury.
“I saw the pictures of him in the gym, he looked absolutely massive, he looks like a tank, wow, he’s obviously been looking after himself,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Look, I think within house, they’ll know what the plan is, they’ll know when he’s coming back, he’ll have a day, probably – the manager and the doctors will have discussions every week about the players that are out and things like that.
“So they will have a plan, they’ll just be sticking to it and being quite tight-lipped about it because these are serious injuries, you don’t want to have to rush somebody back.
“Especially when there’s a lot of cover there at the moment and the players are playing well, the team’s doing well, so there’s no need to rush somebody back.
“They’ll have a plan in mind, I’m sure they’ll stick to it and when he’s ready, he’ll kind of up his fitness levels and up his training schedule and get back when he’s in tip-top condition. Absolute tank.”
