Rodrigo Moreno had a Leeds United debut to forget after coming off the bench to concede the late penalty seized on by Mohammad Salary to seal a 4-3 win for Liverpool in the opening-day thriller.
But Alex McLeish is in no doubt the Spain international striker is a “brilliant” signing who will make a big impact for Marcelo Bielsa’s team this season.
Rodrigo became Leeds’ club-record signing when he joined from Valencia at the end of last month for an initial £27million plus add-ons.
He signed a four-year contract with the Yorkshire giants and is one of their two marquee new recruits in this window along with centre-back Robin Koch.
The defender made the starting line-up for Saturday’s Anfield defeat, while Rodrigo was a 62nd minute replacement for Patrick Bamford.
“It’s really good recruitment by Leeds and the fact he’s Spanish speaking will be very, very easy for Bielsa and him to communicate and they’ll probably have good one to ones,” McLeish told Football Insider.
“Rodrigo is a terrific name to see joining Leeds and, for them to actually get him, wow, it’s a great piece of business.
“I’ve no doubt he’ll make a big impact this season once he’s got his feet under the table and knows what Bielsa wants from him.”
Rodrigo has been capped 23 times by Spain, is a proven marksman at the highest level with eight goals for the national team as well as impressive records at elite clubs in Valencia and Benfica.
He was a key player at Valencia for many seasons, scoring 19 goals in the 2017-2018 campaign and 15 in 2018-2019.
