Leeds United attacker Raphinha could be the Premier League signing of the season.
That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 24-year-old’s “fabulous” display in Tuesday night’s 5-0 win over West Brom.
The Brazilian scored a sensational solo effort, his second goal of the season, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side ran riot at The Hawthorns.
Raphinha was signed from Rennes in October for a fee of £17million, excluding add-ons, and penned a four-year deal at Elland Road.
The winger has pushed Helder Costa out of the starting eleven with a number of eye-catching performances from the right flank.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Raphinha’s performance against the Baggies, Phillips said: “The goal was just fabulous.
“I could see what was going to happen when he cut inside.
“Years ago Ivanovic would have been tighter and crunched him. It is maybe a sign of where he is in his career at the moment but take nothing away from the goal.
“As he cut inside I said to myself, ‘That will be a goal.’ To show the composure and craft to bend that in the top corner – Wow.
“He has settled into life in the Premier League very well, like a duck to water. He is getting a lot of the ball as well which is certainly helping him. He could turn out to be the signing of the season if he keeps performing how he is.”
