Wrexham star James McClean reacts to confirmed Paul Mullin announcement

Wrexham star James McClean has reacted to the news that Paul Mullin has left the Racecourse Ground on a one-season loan deal.

The striker notched a stunning return of 47 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions when the Red Dragons won the 2022/23 National League title.

Mullin remained a regular on the scoresheet when Phil Parkinson’s men won promotion from League Two the following season.

However, when Wrexham sealed their third successive promotion last term, the 30-year-old made just nine starts in League One.

Wrexham ace McClean reacts as Mullin seals Wigan Athletic move

Before joining Wrexham in 2023, McClean was a key player for Wigan Athletic, helping the Latics win the League One title in 2022.

Meanwhile, on Monday, 23 June, the Greater Manchester club announced that the former Ireland international’s teammate will ply his trade on loan at the Brick Community Stadium next season via Instagram.

Wigan’s post attracted a like from McClean, who made over 170 appearances for the North West outfit across two different spells.

Mullin move could go either way for Wigan

Football Insider verdict

While Mullin has played a key role in the Red Dragons’ well-documented rise through the leagues, Parkinson’s side have made the right decision in loaning him out.

Mullin struggled for game time last season

The former Cambridge United and Tranmere Rovers man has never played in the Championship, and already struggled for game time in League One last term.

Meanwhile, Wigan’s decision to acquire a striker who boasts a big name in League One is understandable given the fact that Ryan Lowe’s side were the lowest scorers in the third tier last season.

Furthermore, last campaign’s top scorer, Dale Taylor, has returned to his parent club, Nottingham Forest, after completing his loan spell in the North West.

But Mullin may not prove to be the answer to the Latics’ goal-scoring problems, as the 30-year-old previously struggled in League One with Tranmere and has never been as clinical in the third tier as he is in either League Two or the National League.
