Ian Wright: This Tottenham midfielder is their biggest weapon against Chelsea (not Alli)

By Emma Sanders

Ian Wright has claimed Mousa Dembele is Tottenham’s “biggest weapon” ahead of their clash against Chelsea and not Dele Alli.

The former Arsenal star revealed in his latest Sun column that he believes Dembele is the man Tottenham should turn to when they take on the league leaders on Wednesday evening.

Wright stated Dembele is the best player in the Premier League at taking on defenders and he believes the central midfielder is the player who can cause Chelsea problems, even more so than in-form Alli, who has scored five goals in his last three league appearances.

Dembele was on the substitute’s bench on Sunday, when Spurs demolished Watford 4-1 at Vicarage Road as he he was seemingly saved for the White Hart Lane all-London showdown.

“Dembele is Tottenham’s biggest weapon in the toughest challenge facing any team at the moment — beating Chelsea,” Wright wrote in the Sun.

“When Dembele is fit and strong and on top of his game, there is nobody better in the Premier League at running at defences.

“Not so much in a physical way but with his momentum and technical ability to put players under the cosh in front of their own goal.

“Dembele goes through the gears so smoothly that his strength can be dangerously underestimated. At full pace he is virtually impossible to shove off the ball.

“If he can bulldoze past [N’Golo] Kante and [Nemanja] Matic he is then able to find Harry Kane or Dele Alli. A threaded pass and Spurs are in. Moses is learning defending on the job.

“He leaves gaps behind as he bombs on and those need to be exploited by Dele and Kane.”

Dembele has started just 10 Premier League games this season and his Tottenham career continues to be littered with injury set-backs but he has always demonstrated great ability when he is on the pitch.

He is well liked by Spurs fans and when fit he is a key member of Mauricio Pochettino’s side so will be hoping to earn a start against Chelsea.

The two teams will battle it out at White Hart Lane in the mid-week clash and it’s crucial Tottenham avoid defeat as they already trail Chelsea by 10 points.

Dembele has not scored in the Premier League this season but will be hoping to make an impression after his last appearance against Chelsea was overshadowed by an eye gauging incident with Diego Costa.

Alli has been in great form in recent games and will be looking to score his sixth goal in four fixtures.

Tottenham currently sit in fifth place but they could move up into third with victory over Chelsea.
