'What he did was wrong' - Johnstone blasts Rangers star over controversial conduct
Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has blasted Ibrox star Josh Windass after the attacker appeared to shush Rangers fans following his goal in the 2-0 win over Partick Thistle.
After opening the scoring at Firhill, Windass shushed the Rangers fans in the Jackie Husband stand before posting a photo of it on his personal Instagram account.
The 24-year-old has scored 10 times in 29 appearances so far this season but has been inconsistent leading to criticism from fans and manager Graeme Murty alike.
Johnstone insists Windass’ controversial gesture was “wrong” and believes fans are entitled to criticise players after paying the players’ wages.
“Windass should have just ran past the Rangers fans after he scored, giving them a look as if to say ‘I’ve shown some of you’,” Johnstone said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“What he did was wrong. The fans pay his wages and are entitled to have a go. He basically told 3000 of them to keep quiet.
“And when you play for Rangers, you do not have a go back at the supporters. You just don’t.”
Murty confirmed after the Partick clash that he would speak with Windass over his celebration and the attacker spent almost an hour with the manager at the club’s Auchenhowie training base.
The former Accrington star was the subject of a number of bids from Championship clubs over the January transfer window although one met Rangers’ valuation of the 24-year-old.
Windass has been a mainstay in the Gers side this seaso although could find himself on the sidelines for the weekend clash with League One high-flyers Ayr United in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup at Somerset Park despite scoring four times in his last three appearances.
In other Rangers news, it can be revealed that a key first teamer has sensationally asked to leave after the board failed to stick to their promise of giving him a new deal during the transfer window.
