Xabi Alonso is more likely to be in charge of Liverpool next season than Arne Slot, according to one bookmaker.

Alonso has been heavily linked to the job in recent weeks as Slot continues to deliver poor results at Anfield.

This has seen the Liverpool manager heavily tipped for the sack, especially after the 2-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Now, one UK bookmaker has Alonso at 1/1 to be Liverpool manager at the start of the 2026-27 campaign, with Oddschecker confirming his odds have been reduced. In comparison, Slot sits at 6/4 odds.

As it stands, it is hard to see how Slot bounces back from the recent dip in form.

Liverpool look as bad as ever, and were completely outplayed by Brighton on the weekend.

This has been a running trend this season, with the Reds overseeing plenty of embarrassing results, such as their draw with Tottenham Hotspur and defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in recent weeks.

Champions League qualification is now under serious question, with recent results allowing the likes of Everton and Brentford to join the race.

As a result, Slot’s sacking appears inevitable unless he can qualify for the competition or win the FA Cup or Champions League trophy.

However, with his task inevitably getting harder next season with Mohamed Salah’s departure, it is difficult to see how he can lead a successful 2026-27 campaign, no matter what happens.

Who else is linked to the Liverpool job?

With Football Insider exclusively revealing that Alonso is a leading contender for the Liverpool job if Slot is sacked, it is no surprise that he is the favourite.

However, it remains to be seen if he is prepared to go back into the dugout so quickly after leaving Real Madrid in January.

As a result, one bookmaker believes that Luis Enrique, Sebastian Hoeness and Julian Nagelsmann all have an outside shot of bagging the job at 14/1.

However, it remains to be seen who Liverpool opt to appoint if Slot is sacked, with the successor potentially having a huge task on his hands.
