Xabi Alonso ‘opens door’ to Man City switch after Liverpool reveal
Man City are eyeing Xabi Alonso as one of the leading candidates to replace Pep Guardiola should he walk away at the end of the season.
Alonso was sacked by Real Madrid following what has been a dismal season for the Spanish giants, but remains very highly-rated in managerial circles.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the Spaniard would be interested in taking over at the Etihad.
Alonso is keen to get back into management shortly after his departure from Madrid, and the Man City job is expected to appeal to him.
Despite also having been heavily linked with the potential position at Liverpool, where he served as a player, City could move quicker to tempt him into the Premier League.
Xabi Alonso opens door to Man City move
Football Insider revealed on 6 February that Guiardiola is weighing up his future at Man City and will make the final call over his position later in the season.
Reports have suggested the 55-year-old is growing tired of his position at City following last season’s trophyless campaign and potentially another on the horizon.
As a result, City have already begun putting together a list of potential replacement, with Alonso ranking highly thanks to his previous success at Bayer Leverkusen.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, it’s a very attractive job. Obviously, Pep Guardiola will be a tough act to follow given the success he’s had at the Etihad.
“Man City will be looking for an elite manager to replace an elite manager.
“Xabi Alonso is obviously free, available and looking to come back into management following that spell at Real Madrid.
“I’m sure his style of football would be something that would appeal to the City power brokers as well.

“So again, a young and up and coming manager. I’m sure he’s somebody that’s on City’s list as well.
“City will need to find a top manager to replace Guardiola because it will definitely be a big void to fill if Guardiola does eventually leave the club.“
Liverpool join Man City in race to appoint Alonso
Football Insider revealed on 1 February that Alonso is a clear target for Liverpool if they decide to part ways with Arne Slot after a dismal run of form.
Alonso is seen as a hugely favourable option at Anfield with a belief that the fans would also be in favour of the decision as large sections have become frustrated with Slot.
The Reds have won just six of their last 20 Premier League games, and despite their recent win and impressive Champions League form, questions are being asked.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Alonso is on Liverpool’s list of managerial targets and could be in line to replace Slot.
The current boss is not believed to be under immediate pressure, but could be at risk of losing his job if they do not qualify for the Champions League.
