Xabi Alonso to Liverpool: ‘Big’ update as well-placed source shares the latest
Xabi Alonso currently prefers a move to Bayern Munich rather than Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed that the in-demand manager’s preference at this moment in time is to remain in Germany, which could include him staying at Bayer Leverkusen for another season.
He remains the Reds’ top choice to replace Jurgen Klopp, who is set to depart Anfield at the end of the current campaign after nine years.
However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider, in a “big” update, that Alonso and his family are “happy and comfortable” in Germany.
Xabi Alonso’s move to Liverpool faces a major stumbling block
However, while a move to the Merseyside giants is not off the cards for the Anfield playing legend, it is looking less likely than initially thought given his reservations.
Sources also told Football Insider last month (28 February) that Alonso is also concerned about replacing the legendary Klopp, who is so adored by Liverpool fans.
Liverpool have multiple other options on their shortlist if they fail to persuade their former midfield hero to move to the Premier League.
The club’s data analysts are compiling short and long lists of candidates who fit the specific requirements of US-based owners Fenway Sports Group.
Alonso has garnered an impressive reputation as one of Europe’s best young coaches during his spell with Bayer Leverkusen.
After guiding them to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season, he has mounted an unexpected Bundesliga title charge and is currently 10 points clear of second-place Bayern Munich.

Liverpool remained at the top of the Premier League table after their late controversial 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday (2 March).
They are next set to face Sparta Praha in the Round of 16 in the Europa League on Thursday evening (7 March).
